Celestial crossed as 2023 line honours winner in a time of 1 day, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 53 seconds in what Sam Haynes said on the dock was a brutal race due to extremely unusual conditions for this race…northerly winds and storm cells.

Last year, in much faster conditions, Celestial broke a race record for the fastest conventionally ballasted yacht in a time of 19 hours, 24 minutes and 52 seconds.

Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Commodore, Ian Gidlow (who believes he is possibly the oldest yacht club Commodore in Australia) was delighted to welcome the youngest sailor, Addison Newlan @addy_sailing - who is 14 years of age - to QCYC ready to contest and make sailing history racing the 75th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race aboard Maritimo 11.

QCYC and Commodore Gidlow are avid supporters of encouraging more youth and females into the world of sailing.

If ever there was a name of a yacht that suits the sailors on her, we feel it would have to be 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚 & 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙚.

When 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩 ‘𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞’ 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙢𝙨 puts down on his media sheet that “the most memorable part of the B2G is being handed a carton at the end of the race”, I think you can see where we’re heading here.

Matt, the skipper of this 23-year-old Cookson 12, insists, “𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚 & 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙚 is crewed by (and I quote) “an enthusiastic mix of youth and experience” and also believes it’s the only yacht in the race where you finish heavier than when you started - as the big oven onboard is designed to keep the crew well fed, no less than three hot meals a day!

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚 & 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙚 is supported by G’day Parks - Australia’s largest network of caravan parks, and the crew of champions includes last year’s winner of the Stripey Grant Memorial Award - Matt (Fabio) Ward, for outstanding youth commitment as well as Ben (Ibis) Mann who is part of a team of 4 rowing across the Indian Ocean later in the year to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease.

Other notable characters include Benny Boobs, Eric The German, The Cardinal, Miss Mel and Young Patty.

One of our favourites fronting up yet again for another tilt at Queenlasnd’s legendary blue water classic is 𝘿𝙤𝙪𝙜 𝘾𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙮𝙚’𝙨 𝙁𝙡𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨 𝟮 from RQYS.
Doug is no stranger to this race, competing in 16 trips north, one of which in his trusty 35-foot Cavalier; they won both the PHRF Overall and PHRF Veterans Division in 2017, a feat accomplished with his trusty crew that included three of his sons, Tom, Mike and John.

Doug will be joined this year by an experienced crew that could be the most experienced in history! Peter Cavill is competing in his 44th Brisbane to Gladstone race, winning the Courier Mail Cup numerous times as crew on Saltash and Michael McEniery, who has done more than 30 Gladstone races, won the Courier Mail Cup as skipper of Scampi A in 2000.

Doug, however, pleads that they’re all fairly harmless old men now, but we don’t believe that. A word of warning, you young, fit, designer gear-wearing, day sailors… never dismiss an old seadog when things get tough out there. Old dogs may not have learned any new tricks lately… that's because they’ve never forgotten all the tricks they already knew!
